These are edible, juicy and fragrant berries of dark color (brown-black), with a diameter of up to 1 cm, being the fruits of a shrub belonging to the genus Ribes. Black currants are sometimes also called Russian berries. Having a sour taste and an extraordinarily varied, complex and useful composition, black currants are considered to be one of the most useful berries, containing an immense amount of vitamin C, as well as significant concentrations of vitamins from groups B, E, P, PP, but especially provitamin A, to which are added rutozide, anthocyanins, organic acids (citric and malic), polyphenols, glucose, fructose and other natural sugars, volatile fatty oil, terpene carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, flavonoids (myricetol, quercetol, kaempferol), pectin, tannin, nitrogenous substances, sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and many others. Due to their particularly rich composition in antioxidants and bioactive elements, black currants have a general tonic action, as well as a vitaminizing and remineralizing effect on the entire body, significantly strengthening the immune system and increasing resistance to infections and the development of malignant (cancerous) cells. For this reason, they are especially recommended in cases of serious illnesses, as well as colds or flu, in states of overwork or anemic conditions. Additionally, these downright delicious berries help the heart function at normal parameters, improve vision, facilitate intestinal transit, maintain the health of muscular, bone and nervous systems, thus preventing their degradation with age, but especially the deterioration of brain cognitive functions. Black currants are delicious even when consumed separately, fresh, thus benefiting from all the utility of their composition for the body. These tonic berries can also be added to cereal porridges or cottage cheese, in yogurts or ice cream. You can also grind currants together with sugar or prepare marmalade from them in just five minutes, just as you can prepare jam, syrup, smoothie, marshmallow, jelly, juice, compote or any other fruit drink from them. Some householders make wines, liqueurs, or flavored spirits from black currants, and housewives usually use them as an excellent filling for pies, pancakes, cakes or desserts. Black currants are also put in the dough for baking pastries. Black currant leaves are used for preservation or for preparing tea from them, they are usually used as diuretics, as well as in cases of heart conditions, rheumatism or gout. For winter, black currants can be frozen. The average weight of one black currant berry is 2-3 grams.
