Although they are significantly larger, blueberries are very similar to bilberries, differing from the latter by their lighter color and whitish coating over their entire surface. It should be noted that there are wild and cultivated species of blueberries. Blueberries are considered a dietary product of the highest nutritional value, containing many vitamins (A, B1, K, C, PP, carotene), various antioxidants and flavonoids, organic acids and amino acids, natural antibiotics, pectin, magnesium, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, iron, copper. The elements listed above have the ability to strengthen the immune system, significantly reduce blood cholesterol levels, prevent atherosclerosis and hypertension, and normalize blood circulation. When consumed regularly, blueberries also help restore vision and even normalize the functioning of the heart and endocrine glands. Additionally, these berries normalize metabolism, being particularly useful for disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary system activity, as well as for the liver, spleen and pancreas, for treating varicose veins and joint conditions, and for preventing any kind of infections, inflammations and cancerous tumors, being, above all, an excellent natural antioxidant. For diabetics, blueberries are also very beneficial, enhancing the effect of blood sugar-lowering medications. And moreover, these berries slow down the aging of nerve cells and eliminate radionuclides. To preserve the entire concentration of vitamins and bioactive elements, blueberries are recommended to be consumed especially fresh. However, since the possibilities for fresh storage are quite limited, it should be noted that these berries are sweeter than regular bilberries and are perfectly suited for preparing preserves, marmalades, jams, jellies, syrups, compotes, juices and other fruit drinks, not to mention homemade wines and liqueurs, fillings for pies and other pastries. For winter, blueberries can also be stored frozen, but this requires sufficiently spacious freezers.
